In the event of an uncontrolled flow from the formation, the BOP's job is to seal the wellbore, containing drill pipe, tools, and drilling fluid and shutting in the well before a kick can escalate. It's equipment must work first time, every time.

How It Works
Built to Shut the Well In
When formation pressure exceeds the pressure of the drilling fluid, the well can kick and an uncontrolled kick puts personnel, the rig, and the environment at risk.
The BOP stack sits at the wellhead as the primary mechanical barrier. When a kick is detected, rams close to seal the wellbore around the drill pipe or across the open hole while accumulators provide the stored energy to operate the stack. Chokes and manifolds then give the crew controlled circulation to manage the influx out of the well.
The result is a well that stays under control: the kick contained, the crew and rig protected, and drilling able to resume safely.
