Rotary Slips

Rotary Slips

Rig Floor Handling Tools

Introduction

Rotary slips grip the upper part of the drill string at the rig floor, holding the string secure every time it's suspended in the rotary table.

Designed as a set of hinged metal wedges that form a circular shape around the pipe, casing, or tubing, slips are one of the most frequently handled tools on the rig floor. Present at every connection, every trip.

Premium Pipe Rentals carries rotary slips for tubing, casing, drill pipe, and drill collars, as part of a complete handling tools inventory that includes the insert bowls that seat them.

How It Works

Grip that Tightens Under Load

Every connection and every trip require the string to hang suspended on the rig floor. The tool holding it must grip without damaging the pipe.

The slips' hinged wedges wrap the pipe in a circular set and seat into the tapered bowl in the rotary table. As the string's weight comes onto the slips, the taper drives the wedges inward. The heavier the load, the firmer the grip on the pipe body.

The result is a string held securely at the floor through every make-up, break-out, and trip with the load converted into grip rather than working against it.
