Directional Tool Rentals

Directional Tool Rentals

BHA Components, Inspected and on Location When the Rig Needs Them.

DTI started in 1984 as Directional Rentals, supplying BHA components to directional drillers, and it is still the core of our business. From near-bit stabilizers and non-mag collars to subs, filters and hole openers, DTR supplies the components that make up the BHA, inspected and ready to run.

Get in Touch

Challenge

On a directional well, the BHA changes as the hole does. When the right component isn't on location, or doesn't run to spec, the rig waits.

Here's where rental support shows up on the rig.

Missing Components

Hole sizes, connections and BHA designs change from well to well. One missing crossover or the wrong stabilizer OD turns a planned trip into flat time.

Worn or Fatigued Tools

Undergauge blades cost footage, and a fatigued connection can leave part of the BHA lost-in-hole and the rig on a fishing job.

Capital Tied Up in Iron

Owning a full BHA inventory means paying for storage, inspection, repair and redeployment between wells, whether the tools are running or not.

Capabilities

Rental Built Around the Rig Schedule

Forty years of supplying directional drilling has shaped how DTR works. We build most of the fleet ourselves, inspect returning tools against industry standards and keep every order visible from request to delivery.

Built and Inspected In-House

Most of the fleet is manufactured in our own facilities under an ISO 9001 and API Spec Q1 quality system, and ASNT Level II inspectors check returns against TH Hill DS-1 and API RP7G-2.

Coverage Where You Drill

Support across every major North American basin, a market leader in the deepwater Gulf of America, and BHA rental fleets in Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific.

Ordered and Tracked in COMPASS

Search by tool type, connection and OD, repeat past orders and follow status from order to delivery in our customer portal, on desktop or mobile.

Examples of the Directional Tool Rentals Range

Supporting Equipment

Beyond our flagship technologies, we stock the supporting infrastructure to overcome complex downhole challenges.

From sub-assemblies to pressure control and handling equipment, our inventory is ready when you are.

Drill Collars

  • Drill Collars

Both steel and in non-mag. The non-mag neutralizes magnetic interference near the poles, with strength and hardness for standard drill string tools.

  • Spiral Drill Collar

Spiral grooves reduce differential sticking while neutralizing magnetic interference for accurate directional drilling near the poles.

  • Steel Drill Collar

Adds weight to the bit and stiffness to the BHA, manufactured from heat-treated 4145H modified alloy steel.

Stabilizers

  • ClearPath™ Nearbit Stabilizer

Maximizes stability at the bit and minimizes bit whirl, with dome-shaped blades for reduced torque and drag.

  • ClearPath™ Bitbox Stabilizer

Positioned directly above the bit to improve stability and weight transfer, without compromising steerability or torque.

  • Integral Blade Spiral String Stabilizer

One-piece milled stabilizer for rotating applications, with a 270-degree wrap and high total flow area.

  • Integral Blade Near Bit Stabilizer

Run only at the bit, with box connections both ends and a bore for float.

  • Integral Blade Autotrac Stabilizer

Medium crown length and shorter taper angles for directional and horizontal applications, with hardfaced blades.

  • Integral Blade Nortrac Stabilizer

Straight blades maintain directional control during sliding operations, with medium-to-high flow area and hardfaced edges.

  • Integral Blade D-Trac Stabilizer

Tight spiral blades reduce vibration and torque, extending downhole tool life on MWD, LWD, and RSS.

  • Sleeve Type Stabilizers

One-piece mandrel with interchangeable sleeves, swapped out quickly on the rig floor and discarded when worn.

  • Welded Blade String Stabilizers

Straight-bladed, high-strength 4145 steel body for large diameter holes, hardfaced for extended tool life.

Sub-Assemblies

  • Float Subs

House the float valve within the BHA, controlling fluid flow and preventing cuttings from plugging the bit jets.

  • Filter Subs

House retrievable or non-retrievable mud screens, including Diffuser blade technology, to filter drilling fluid downhole.

  • Pup Joints

Short tubulars for spacing-specific drilling operations, ordered with tapered or square shoulders and thread protectors.

  • Circulating Subs

Integral, one-piece pin or box connection subs featuring a WECO figure 1502 union for pump-in operations.

  • UBHO and Muleshoe Subs

Run below a non-mag collar with an oriented landing sleeve for directional survey equipment or motors.

  • Side-Entry Subs

Single or double port, one-piece design tested to 1.5 times safe working pressure for specialized pumping.

  • Saver Subs

Sacrificial connections that protect the Kelly or top drive from repeated wear, easily repaired or replaced.

  • Crossover and Bit Subs

Adapt varying drill string connection sizes, from drill pipe to collars or collars to collars.

  • Lift Subs

Flow-through or conventional design with a machined elevator recess, built for handling long or heavy BHA components.

Hole Openers

  • Devil Drill - Bladed Hole Opener

Tungsten-carbide-dressed blades enlarge the wellbore where roller cones aren't needed, with jets for effective hole cleaning.

  • Security Type Hole Opener

Fixed-diameter enlargement for pilot holes and clean-out runs, with hard-faced cutters that swap out quickly.

Impact

A Fixture on North American Rigs

Directional drillers and operators have rented BHA components from DTI for four decades. The same rental model, inspection standards and COMPASS ordering now support operators across Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific.
