Spiral Stabilizer

Spiral Stabilizer

BHA Stabilization Tools

Introduction

Spiral stabilizers hold the string on gage while limiting how much of the tool touches the wellbore wall at any one time.

Machined as a single body with helically wound blades set at full gage OD, spiral stabilizers keep the string centered as they rotate, without the long, flat wall contact of a straight-blade design. The wrap moves the contact point around the wellbore continuously rather than holding it in one place.

DTI stocks spiral stabilizers in steel and non-magnetic material, for string and near-bit positions, spanning 4-1/16" to 17-3/8" gage sizes and connections from 2-3/8 REG through 7-5/8 REG.

Steel and Non-Magnetic, One Range

Standard 4145H alloy steel for general string use, non-magnetic stainless grades for near-bit placement and MWD-sensitive intervals.

String and Near-Bit Coverage

Spiral stabilizers rented for both positions in the string, not just one.

Full Size and Connection Range

Gage sizes from 4-1/16" to 17-3/8", connections from 2-3/8 REG up to 7-5/8 REG, covering the full spread of collar and pipe sizes in a string.

How It Works

Contact that Moves Instead of Drags

A stabilizer must hold the string on gage without turning into a point of friction or sticking risk itself. The more of its surface that stays in constant contact with the wellbore wall, the more that risk grows.

The spiral blades wrap around the body at an angle, so as the string rotates, each blade's contact with the wellbore moves rather than staying fixed in place. The stabilizer still holds full gage OD and keeps the string centered, but no single stretch of wall carries sustained contact the way it would against a straight blade.
